Otago

Otago is the third largest region of New Zealand. In the west there are many mountains including Mount Aspiring, the highest peak in Otago. There are many glacial lakes around this area as well. In the east the region is dominated with grasslands. This is where the majority of the population lives. The towns Cromwell and Queenstown are the largest towns in this region and they are surrounded by mountains, preventing cold winds from reaching the towns.

Dunedin

Dunedin is the second-largest city in the South Island of New Zealand. The city is a true ‘Student City’ meaning that a lot of students, who go to the University of Otago, live in Dunedin. More than 21% of the population of the city is between the age of 15 and 24.

While you are in Dunedin, it is worth to visit The Octagon. This is an eight-sided plaza in the city centre. Many historic buildings are near this plaza like the St. Paul’s Cathedral, the Municipal Chambers and the statue of Robert Burns, a Scottish poet.

Queenstown has activities the entire year round. Since there are so many mountains in the area, skiing and snowboarding is possible during the winter while during the summer biking and hiking is a great choice. If you are an adrenaline junkie, don’t worry, you can go bungee jumping too!
